CMY to XYZ

What is CMY?

CMY stands for Cyan, Magenta and Yellow - three colors that printers blend to reproduce a wide array of hues. Unlike screens that beam many colors, printers must mix tints. Understanding this color system unlocks printing possibilities.

Primary Printer Colors

  1. Cyan - The C in CMY - a bluish-green shade.
  2. Magenta - The M in CMY - a reddish-purple tone.
  3. Yellow - The Y in CMY - a cheerful, warm yellow.

By adjusting the strength of each primary color ink and overlapping combinations of them, printers can replicate photographs or designs.

Subtractive Color Process

Mixing CMY inks works by subtracting wavelengths of light. Apply them fully and you see black. Leave white paper untouched for white. Vary CMY proportions between these extremes for vibrant intermediates.

Augmenting with Black

For enhanced contrast and richer dark tones, many color printers also operate with black ink, labeled as CMYK models. The K represents Key - shorthand for black in printing contexts.

What is XYZ?

XYZ represents a universal language for specifying colors in graphics and imaging based on human vision. It’s like a map for navigating colors.

Standardizing Color Communication

Imagine a box of crayons organized by specific color qualities. XYZ offers a consistent way to index colors like crayons in a box - but for digital spaces. It bridges communication gaps between devices.

Describing Light Rather Than Pigment

Unlike CMYK focused on pigments, XYZ depicts how our eyes perceive light by breaking it down into key components:

X - Red/Green Balance

Y - Yellow/Blue Balance

Z - Brightness Balance

By tuning these building blocks, XYZ codes the entire spectrum of colors that our vision system can see.

Precise Color Reproduction

Graphic arts depend on accurately sharing colors across different programs, screens and printers. XYZ offers a shared tongue for devices to understand colors identically, crucial for precision.

In short, XYZ enables unified color communication among devices and software to reliably reproduce imagery based on human visual response. It’s a map to navigating color digitally.

What are the Advantages of CMY to XYZ?

Shifting from CMY (cyan, magenta, yellow) ink mixing to the XYZ color system offers advantages, even if subtle, for displaying and manipulating colors digitally.

More Perceptually Accurate Colors

Unlike CMY which can misalign with human vision, XYZ better matches real-world color perception. It codes colors based on how our eyes see different aspects of light - creating truer-to-life digital colors.

Boosting Cross-Device Consistency

CMY blending depends on devices, producing inconsistent displays. XYZ colors translate reliably across screens/programs using standardized parameters - critical for uniformity.

Smoothing Digital Color Workflows

Though crucial for printing, CMY struggles in digital workflows handling colors mathematically. XYZ’s numerical color language integrates easily into computational applications.

Enhanced Precision and Control

XYZ enables finer-grained color adjustments vs CMY. Its light-based mathematical framework allows more intricate tweaking - vital for advanced image editing.

In summary, XYZ promises perceptual accuracy, cross-device consistency, digital workflow integration and enhanced manipulability - unlocking superior color reproduction.

CMY to XYZ Examples

Converting CMY to XYZ requires mathematical transformations, but the main idea is to remove color components based on the original CMY mix. Click here for CMY to LAB.

XYZ color space is based on parameters for red, green and blue perception. We take the initial CMY color and gradually remove the cyan, magenta and yellow parts to get the XYZ equivalents.

For example, suppose we have the following values:

CMY = 0.2 Cyan, 0.4 Magenta, 0.6 Yellow

First, we calculate how much white light the cyan filters out:

X = Maximum white light × (1 - cyan %)

We repeat for magenta and yellow, following the white light removed by each blend component.

Finally, we remove the effect of black (K), taking it into account if it is present. When the cyan, magenta and yellow reductions are run, the XYZ triples are obtained.

In summary, we take white light and reduce the red, green and blue elements corresponding to the CMY blend ratios. The resulting XYZ encodes the human perception of this mixed color. Converting between color spaces involves resolving and reconciling color components.
